A better way to start your day

Negative thoughts: everyone has them from time to time. They can be annoying, make you sad, rain on your parade. But having them is perfectly normal! However, when these negative thoughts stay in your head and fill your mind for a prolonged period of time, they don’t leave much space for positive thoughts. Not only is this annoying: negative thoughts can ruin your day and can completely change the way you look at your life.

Are you ready to make a change and to start thinking more positive? Here are 3 tips to start your day in a more positive way and get the positivity flow going.

1. Positive Affirmations

Positive affirmations are positive statements. They are so much more than just uplifting quotes: positive affirmations – when done the right way – can help you challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts, may help mitigate the effects of stress and can help you achieve a more positive outlook on life. When you repeat these positive affirmations often, and truly believe in them, you can start to make some real positive changes in your life.

As mentioned, there is a certain way to do this. Good positive affirmations

  1. Are always in the present tense: so no “I am going to”, “I will” or “I want to”. You can, you have, and you are.
  2. Only include positive words. So no negative words or words of doubt. These affirmations are meant to make you feel positive, so phrase them accordingly. Don’t include any words like “I can’t”, “I will not” or “I don’t”, even if it is to avoid something negative, for example: I will not be broke. It is better to rephrase this affirmation into I have money / I am rich.
  3. Are spoken as if they are a fact and as if they are the truth. So no words of doubt or probability. Again: You can, you have, and you are. You can do it. You have skill x. You are rich. You are amazing.

Phrase two or three positive affirmations. Each morning, speak these positive affirmations out loud, look at yourself in a mirror while doing this, and repeat them a few times. Say it like you mean it! Speak the words into existence and believe it is done.

2. Be present

Another thing is to be present. This exact moment is the only thing you really have: the past is the past, the future isn’t here yet. You are here now. Actively reminding yourself to be present every now and then helps you to stop dwelling on the past and not to worry about what the future holds.

This doesn’t mean that the past and the future aren’t important: of course your past experiences have taught you a thing or two, and it’s never a bad idea to somewhat think ahead for future things to come. But the important thing when it comes down to thinking about the past or the future is: you can’t control them. The past is done, the future is yet to come, so make the best of now.

How to be present? Stop what you’re doing, take a 5 minute break. Look around you, what do you see? What do you hear, smell, feel? Tell yourself: I am here, I am now, I am present. This is what your present looks like. You don’t have to like or dislike it just yet, just be for a moment.

3. One positive line a day…

… may not keep the doctor away. However, it is a nice way to start off your day! Keep a notebook (or just a simple piece of paper) and a pen next to your bed, so you can put this to practice as soon as you wake up. Write down one sentence that is positive and happy. Once you’ve written it down, it will stay on your mind for the rest of the day, consciously or subconsciously. Examples of positive sentences are:

– I am very lucky to live the life I’m living.

– It is going to be a wonderful day today

– I heard birds singing when I woke up, it was like music to my ears

– I love my pets/family/job/drawing skills/ etc.

As you can see, there are a lot of different things you can write one positive sentence about. Besides, writing down one positive thing triggers your mind to think about more positive things. Get that positive flow going, such a brighter way to start your day!

Make a habit out of these three things and notice a change in your thoughts. Remember, true change takes time, but baby steps will get you there.
